Protecting Your Feet with Diabetes

Diabetes can affect blood flow and nerve sensation in your feet, making them vulnerable to infections and injuries. With proper care, you can prevent most complications.

Why Foot Care Matters

People with diabetes face higher risks of:

  • Neuropathy – reduced feeling in the feet
  • Poor circulation – slower healing
  • Infections – that can become serious quickly

Important: 8 in 10 diabetic foot infections are preventable with proper daily care.

Your Daily Foot Care Routine

1. Inspect Daily

  • Use a mirror to check the soles of your feet
  • Look for cuts, blisters, redness, or swelling
  • Check between your toes for cracks or fungal infections

2. Wash and Dry Properly

  • Use lukewarm water (test with your elbow)
  • Mild soap only – avoid soaking
  • Dry thoroughly, especially between toes

3. Moisturise Smart

  • Apply lotion to prevent dry, cracked skin
  • Avoid between toes – moisture here promotes fungal growth
  • Use diabetic-friendly foot creams

4. Trim Nails Carefully

  • Cut straight across to prevent ingrown nails
  • File edges gently – don't cut too short
  • If you can't see well, ask for help or see a podiatrist

5. Protect Your Feet

  • Never walk barefoot – even at home
  • Wear well-fitting shoes with good support
  • Check inside shoes for objects before wearing
  • Choose breathable cotton socks

Warning Signs to Watch For

Seek medical attention immediately if you notice:

  • Wounds that don't heal within a few days
  • Signs of infection (redness, warmth, pus)
  • Changes in skin colour
  • Persistent pain or numbness
